A New Creation

O pen your Bible and you’ll find 2 Corinthians 5:17, a well-known verse highlighting the reality of a new creation. Maybe you’ve read it or heard it.

Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; old things have passed away; behold all things have become new.

Being made new is an incredible miracle for sure. But the verse may be broader and more impactful than first blush would suggest. “…if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation…” The words “he is” are not in the original text. Some translations acknowledge this fact by placing those words, “he is” in italics in our English Bibles. Rendered literally, the verse might read, “If anyone is in Christ—a new creation, old things are no more, all things have become new.”

Does this subtlety even matter? Well, it might. The verse could be saying that a completely new reality has opened up for the one believing in Jesus. In other words, at the moment of belief, a person steps into a whole new creation. All things have become new. This would certainly fit with the reality of God’s Kingdom all around us. The New English Bible captures this idea and translates this verse with these words, “When anyone is united to Christ, there is a new world; the old order has gone, and a new order has already begun.”

Not only does God create something new in us when we place our faith in Jesus, but He also opens up a whole new world before us.

Maybe God’s newness is always all around us waiting to be enjoyed. Not only does God create something new in us when we place our faith in Jesus, but He also opens up a whole new world before us. We’ve been ushered into a new existence! And God is with us to help us live in this new creation.
